Training staff at Suters Ltd

Like all go ahead modern department store groups it was essential for Suters to provide first class up to date training facilities for their staff.

Every week the stores would open half an hour later so training could take place in a department or in an appropriate training area, like the training room on the third floor in the image above left in Slough. Occasionally outside training providers would be used, but the majority of the time it would be from within the company and the resident staff trainer. Staff also attended a summer school in Oxford and courses at the College for Distributive Trades in London and local colleges.

At the Uxbridge store the personnel office on the third floor doubled as a training room, due to lack of space at Uxbridge.

In the course of the business there were times when everyone was involved with training, either being trained or training staff. One example was when Decimalisation in Britain took place and everyone had to be ready for the switchover on Monday 15 February 1971 - 'Decimal Day'. (Image above does not enlarge)

Suters Staff Trainee Programme

This booklet described details of the trainne programme. Q. Is 'Suters' part of a big combine? A. No 'Suters' is an independent family controlled store. It was started by Mr G.W.Suter and his son Clarence. In 1920 the Slough store opened followed in 1924, by the Uxbridge store. The Suter family have been in c;othing trade since 1732 when they were 'Hatters and Tanners' Retford,Nottinghamshire. There is a friendly, family atmosphere in the Company, and the Directors soon get to know every member of their staff.

On the last page is the contact info for the Store managers. Slough "ask for Mr Reed and at Uxbridge Mr Michael (Suter) - Because there were so many family members involved in the business, none could be called "Mr Suter" so they were called by their first names with a "Mr" first. Mr Clarence, Mr John, Mr Tom etc and their wives were known as Mrs John etc. Philip Suter recalls at Bourne & Hollingsworth the same rule applied, but on a smaller scale as there were fewer members of the Bourne family involved with the business.
